ESPYING DESIGN
If I go to see an exhibition dedicated to design, it’s as if common objects are somehow bestowed with additional elegance and aethetic appeal. But in my daily life, I can forget to take note.
Although it seems that many objects today are created with little concern for design, I suspect that with a bit more diligence they can be found almost anywhere. Stove top grills are a case in point. Manhole covers are another.
At the very least, I have decided to keep an eye out for everyday works of art awaiting to be discovered.
THREE SISTERS SANCTUARY
While visiting Three Sisters Sanctuary in Goshen, Massachusettes I was reminded of Opus 40 in Saugerties, New York. Each is an impressive creative realisation of one man’s vision. They may be dissimilar in many ways but both environments inspire an appreciation for singular quests and tenacity.
Three sisters is an unusual, quirky place, that is home to many imaginative outdoor sculptures, both abstract and figurative, an amphitheater made from stone, huge rocks(some credited with healing and energy), and a wetlands that boasts a beaver-made dam.
The sanctuary is designed for contemplation and peace, but the grounds also house a shop decorated with gadgets, doodads, thingamajigs and whatchamacallits.
Inside you can find a dizzying assortment of antique wood and gas stoves lovingly refurbished, if that is more your thing.
CREATING ART
Making art requires thought, time and effort. It is not necessarily easy, sometimes taxing-even difficult, and can wreak havoc with ones ego. But fortunately the pleasures abound.
One of the great advantages of pursuing art is that time is on our side. Our years offer knowledge and experiences that bring richness to the work.
Most of us start generating inventive work as children, but for various reasons we fail to continue.
Fortunately our capacity for imagination and creating art need not end.
SEEING THE TREES
Forests are wonderous places. Each offers a different array of colors, fragrances and sounds. I do not walk in forests as often as I would like, places where I inevitably experience discovery and awe. But sometimes I am walking quickly on a well worn path and fail to notice the endless subtleties, the various hues, hints of the burgeoning life often unseen.
Forests are places where we can get lost in the best of ways. But we may not always have them near.
Fortunately observations that offer satisfaction and inspiration can be found from a single tree.
THE ALLURE OF BEAUTY
I am fascinated by our efforts to decorate and embellish objects since ancient times. The designs are often inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Our desire to adorn objects and ourselves is not dissimilar to the feathers of a male bird attracting a mate and flowers enticing insects to pollinate.
Our definition of art continues to evolve.
What I’ve deemed to be superfluous rather than essential are perhaps vestiages of our attempts and will to survive.

A VIEW FROM THE TOP
New York City has long been associated with skyscrapers: symbols of grandeur, success, commerce, and a workplace for many. These iconic edifices have often provided the public a bird’s eye view of the surroundings.
But the constructions of today are of a different breed. They are arrogantly tall with dizzying price tags and they are private residences. Fifty-seventh street has recently been dubbed Billionaires’ Row . The views from the top are now reserved for only those individuals who can afford them.
Additional controversies of these elitist structures ensue. Many argue that their heights will block rays of sun that once shone on Central Park.
In more ways than one, the public is being left in the shadows.
